Hello, my name is

Gerardo Hidalgo-Cuellar

I am a software developer, data analyst, and web creator living and working out of beautiful Boulder, CO. I am a graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder where I recieved a Bachelor's degree in Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences.

About me

My name is Gerardo Hidalgo-Cuellar, a software and outdoor enthusiast based in Boulder, CO.

I enjoy developing software and applications for data analysis, IoT, and designing smart and intuitive user interfaces.

While at the University of Colorado, Boulder, I did research in biology and astronomy, worked as a planetarium presenter/material developer, and interned as a Software Engineer with the Laboratory of Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP). Through this work I found my passion for software development, I love to create applications and other software that I am proud of and allow me to continue learning and having fun.

I am an outdoor enthusiast so most of my days start or end with some time climbing or bouldering close to home in Boulder or Eldrodo Canyon, or trail runs in the foothills.

Here are some technologies I have been working with recently:

  • C
  • Python
  • R
  • SQL
  • HTML
  • CSS
  • JavaScript
  • Flask

Work Experience

Software Engineer, Intern at LASP
  • Increasing efficiency and speed of data bussing systems from different science oriented satellites.
  • Creating better user interfaces for existing telemetry programs.
  • Development in Python and C.
  • LASP employee page.
Undergraduate Research Assistant with the Astrophysics Department
  • Project: Analysis & Composition of Diffuse Intergalactic Clouds.
  • Retrieval and analysis of spectral data from the Hubble Space Telescope.
  • Data retrieval using SQL and processed taking molecular composition of diffuse gas clouds found at specific distances.
  • Wrote semesterly proposals for Undergraduate Research Oppotunities Program (UROP).
Laboratory and Learning Assistant with the Physics Department
  • Helped to facilitate a Physics of Light and Color course. Held weekly office hours, test review sessions, was in the classroom daily, and helped develop a weekly review session.
  • Worked with faculty to ensure students in the classrooms were continuously problem-solving and having thoughtful discussions.
Planetarium/Science Presenter at Fiske Planetarium
  • Presented and put together astronomy, physics, geology, as well as biology planetarium shows for audiences of all ages and communities around the Boulder area, ranging from college students, primary education, families, and adults.
  • Helped develop educational astronomy labs for use within the planetarium as well as for outreach around Boulder.
Science Educator at Astrocamp
  • Science educator/instructor with a focus on physics and astronomy. Development of curriculum, teaching of technical material, and handling experiment.
  • Outdoor education, ropes-course technician (safety and management), and youth management. Guiding a group of students (grades ranging from 3-12th) for 3-14 days year-round.

Traffic Violations Analysis in Montgomery County, MD
  • Data analysis of some traffic violations in Montgomery County, MD. Traffic violations looked at included speed exceeded on differing types of roads (highways vs. non-highway roads), time of day, day of the month, and the frequency stopped over the mean speed exceeded (9mph). Traffic stops were mapped via GPS coordiates to look at density differences.
Traffic Violations GPS data.
Personal Website (V1)
  • Version 1 of my personal website built with bootstrap and hosted on GitHub Pages.
Home Control, an project looking at IoT
  • Using a raspberry pi, working on several projects to make a smarter home via Internet of Things. A constant work in progress, but stated with LED controls and expanding to weather & light sensors using an arduino, and a personal climbing wall setup.

I am always on the lookout for new and interesting projects.
